The Master Key System is a self-help book and philosophy for success. It was written by Charles Haanel and published in 1912. One of the first books to explicitly describe the power of positive thinking, it sold over 7 million copies during Haanel's lifetime. The Master Key System has been called "the most famous book on success ever written" and "a must-read for anyone who wishes to achieve anything". Described as a textbook on personal development, it lays out laws which can be used to unlock one's full potential and achieve any goal. It also promises "the miraculous power which leads man from failure and poverty to success and achievement. Nothing can stop it." Charles Haanel (1859–1939) was a prolific author and lecturer in the New Thought Movement who published over 200 books, hundreds of articles and promoted his teachings through speaking engagements. He is described by "Kundalini: The Evolutionary Energy in Man" author William Walker Atkinson, as: The Master Key System is often cited to describe similar beliefs concerning metaphysics and self-improvement. It has been distinguished from the New Thought Movement that it spawned by its unique emphasis on metaphysical concepts such as universal law and universal truth. These ideas are not common in New Thought literature but are found in other areas such as Tibetan Buddhism and Jainism. The Master Key System has been called the "Rosetta Stone" for the mind. It is recognized as one of the first sources to introduce many concepts now familiar to students of metaphysics including positive thinking, personal success, visualization, creative thought and affirmations. The concept of using mental power to achieve one's goals was well known to ancient mystics but Haanel's work introduced these principles in a clear and concise manner which appealed to modern intellectuals at the beginning of the 20th century. The book begins with an introduction by Haanel which describes "The Master Key" as a metaphor for God or nature. After man starts to understand nature and its workings, he can use it to achieve anything he wants.
