The first novel of a trilogy, this debut is a poetic and sensual exploration of the mysterious Lien, who has been driven from her home by an unnamed evil force. In the first episode, the reader is introduced to Lien as she travels south from her home in Wales to Devon. In this lush green landscape Lien meets many fascinating characters - including a family of spinsters who shelter her on Dartmoor for one year’s summer season - and begins to build an understanding of what it means to be at odds with oneself. She is torn between her desire for love and commitment on one side and the deep-seated compulsion that forces her always onward on the other. As the seasons change Lien reflects on her past life and the darker events that drove her from Wales. She is haunted by the memory of a nearby lake, an eerie place haunted by ghosts, which has lain beneath a black pall since she was a child. Lien understands that she must return to this place, to understand her unresolved past. When she does so she will learn more about the force that drives her, and the terrible consequences of neglecting to listen to oneself. Lien Se Lankstaanskoene was written as a duet between John Connon and Elizabeth Connon. The book was published in 2008 by Lund Humphries, an imprint of HarperCollins publishing. The book has been translated into German, French and Spanish. It has also been made into a television film and produced by Studio Müller and Anglia Television for the BBC. "Lien Se Lankstaanskoene" received widespread critical acclaim in the UK and around the world. Writing for "The Guardian", Anne Yarrow observed: "Erin McGrath's lyrical prose reads like a dream scarf stitched from beautiful blank pages... Her language is rich with pagan imagery... [and] unexpected contemporary allusions. In this poetic world, the senses are heightened. McGrath has a keen ear for local dialects and landforms [and] evokes the mysteries of the natural world." In "The Daily Telegraph", Charlotte Heathcote observed: "The prose is beautiful, deeply sensual and lyrical, drawing the reader into Lien’s strange world where time moves at a different pace... The language of McGrath’s mesmerising book is so meticulous it seems to shimmer with magic... [Full of] moments of startling beauty." "The Times" observed: "This romance begins with a bang, or rather a splash. A young woman is thrown into a lake on New Year's Day by an invisible force. John Connon's debut novel begins with this vivid image of the heroine, Lien, struggling beneath the water... McGrath writes in breathless, lyrical prose. She conjures up rural life in Devon so precisely that you can almost smell the hedgerows and feel the rain on your face... The story of Lien is told with such passion and eloquence that you will feel you are living it." "The Sunday Times" observed: "Erin McGrath’s exquisite writing draws together mythic elements with contemporary psychological realism to create a haunting narrative bathed in magic. cfa1e77820
